Chinese Remedial Massage (also known as Tui Na) is a safe and effective healing therapy developed over centuries in China to treat a variety of ailments and conditions. It is considered one of the three main components of Traditional Chinese Medicine along with acupuncture and herbal medicine, each having their own strengths and areas of expertise. Considered in the modern day to be a form of natural holistic medicine, meaning working to aid the bodies own innate ability to heal itself and taking the whole body into account during treatments, Chinese Remedial Massage is a unique form of physical therapy that aims to alleviate symptoms whilst also treating the root cause.
Treatments involve massage to help circulate the bodies’ qi (energy) by working with acupressure points and meridians (pathways where energy flows) and may sometimes involve techniques such as cupping and gua sha to do so. Although based around age old Chinese principles, modern training fully incorporates up to date Western research and knowledge into anatomy, physiology and pathology. At On The Mend Therapies we don’t believe that one system of medicine is better or worse than the other, but that combining different perspectives and knowledge can only lead to a more complete level of care.
A wide variety of conditions can be treated including every day aches and pains associated with office work, sports and different day to day activities as well as acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Relief can also often be found for systemic issues such as insomnia, stress, digestive issues, high blood pressure, emotional issues etc. There is no magic cure for any condition and usually if a certain pill or treatment sounds too good to be true, it is. The longer a condition persists for the longer it usually takes to clear, so don’t ignore your syptoms any longer, seek out treatment today!
One hour treaments are available in central Hobart out of Breeze Natural Body Therapies, or in Kingston out of the Kingston Chiropractic Centre (see Contact Us page for details) strictly by appointment for $75.
30 minute or 90 minute sessions are also available by request, please enquire for prices. We understand that sometimes you may need to reschedule or cancel an appointment, if this is the case please provide as much notice as possible or we may be forced to charge a cancellation fee.
Please note - At the Kingston Chiropractic Centre we only accept cash, no EFTPOS facilities are currently available. Private health rebates are available depending on your individual health fund, please let us know if you require a receipt for this purpose.
A typical treatment lasts one hour including consultation. It is recommended for your first treatment to arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill out a client information sheet for our records. The length of consultation at the beginning of the session depends on the complexity or number of issues being presented and will usually be longer during the first treatment than in subsequent sessions in order to establish the best method of approaching your particular needs.
The treatment itself is performed with the client lying either face up or face down on a portable massage table whilst being fully draped with linen. Most treatments involve using massage oil directly on the skin however your privacy, comfort and discretion is of the utmost importance and if you feel uncomfortable disrobing then treatments can be performed through linen whilst you are fully clothed.
Ancillary techniques may be deemed necessary during the course of the treatment, such as cupping (sometimes called fire cupping), gua sha (scraping) and occasionally moxibustion (the burning of a medicinal herb near the skin to warm the area) as well as the use of liniment. If these arise during your session we will discuss this with you first to make sure you are happy to receive these methods of treatment.
After your session you may feel some tiredness or tenderness associated with the treatment however any symptoms you may experience usually pass within 12-24 hours. These are normal as massage engages your bodies own healing processes. If you intend to do something demanding immediately after treatment such as going back to work or heading to a meeting or exam please let us know so we can tailor your treatment to make sure you don’t feel too wiped out at the end of the session. If you require a receipt please let us know before or during a treatment.
